The party escorts Dwarf master smith Hiro from Quodeth to Three Towers aboard the Dory, one of Aubrek's merchant shipping fleet.  A pirate ship (the Harvester of Sorrow) attacks off the coast of Jal Dror Island.

The engagement started with a bang when Rae eviscerates a conveniently crowded group of pirates
preparing to board the Dory with her first fireball.  The fireball ignites several barrels of Katagian fire and the ensuing inferno and subsequent explosions may well have been the reason Yar slipped and fell overboard.  Yar adapts quickly, climbing up the Yar-board side of the pirate ship.  Splinters wares down the pirate officers with sneak attacks.  Demiguz arrives to the scrap late, and rather sozzled, having polished off the rum below decks.  Only two of the twenty pirates survive the encounter, one jumping overboard,  the other surrendering.  Demiguz accepts the surrender of the (former) pirate Turbo on the condition he showed him where the pirates kept the rum.  Turbo agrees, taking Demiguz below decks.  Demiguz finds an Atlantean cube of force amongst the captain's gaming dice and gives it to Yar then heads off in search of the booze.  Rae persuades Yar to sell it to her for 50gp.  Splinters gives Turbo a welcome drink, Turbo is very sick but doesn't die.  What remains of the Harvester of Sorrow is looted then scuttled

Upon return to Three Towers, Aubrek invites the party to dinner, Hiro and the Commodore also guests.  The Commodore discusses her irritating Harpy problem as well as the endless raids of the pirates and beastmen.  The party agrees to investigate the rumors of a pirate attack on the Monastry at Veilshard.  Splinters commissions Hiro to forge him a steel blade.

Dawn 11th Kilson 2144
Ringed by cliffs and dangerous reefs seemingly the only route onto the island is across the Skull Dunes.  The party uses the jolly-boat to reach the beach then skulks into the dunes.

Yar picks up the pirates trail in the dunes their discarded equipment is easy to follow. There must have been a battle recently, but there are no corpses?  Deep into the dunes, the party loses the pirates trail and decides to head straight north for the Monastery.  However, skeleton guardians emerge from the dunes, shaking themselves free of the sand and attack.  The party deals with the first wave of skeletons with relative ease. But, as they press on, more skeletons rise from the beach, until a keening horde of boney undead surrounds the heroes. Running for their lives, the brave adventurers flee out of the dunes, the force field of the atlantean cube saving several of them.  But not Turbo, who goes down to become another of the monastery's grim guardians.

Turbo's and his new friends are waiting for you to come back.
To the south, the skeletal army in the dunes blocks retreat.  To the north, the burnt ruins of Veilshard Monastery.

Skull Dunes, morning 11th Kilson 2144

I'm waiting in my cold cell when the bell begins to chime
Reflecting on my past life and it doesn't have much time
'Cause at 5 O'clock they take me to the gallows pole, yeah
The sands of time for me are running low, running low
When the priest comes to read me the last rites
Take a look through the bars at the last sights
Of a world that has gone very wrong for me
Can it be that there's some sort of error
Hard to stop the surmounting terror
Is it really the end, not some crazy dream?

San woke with a start, gasping for air.  Slick with sweat and shaking violently, the memory terrified him.

"Is he contagious Taendertyg-taisho?" said Islieth.

The elf, gave San the creeps, it was if she could see right through him and knew the terrible things he had done.  Instinctively San reached for a bottle. He cursed to find it empty, hurling it against the ship's hull.

"No, he's just stinking drunk again Isi"  said the nimothan in his strange accent.

"Come on San, its time to go, and the others are waiting on the beach" Tyg grunted as he hauled San to his feet.

On deck, Sar was showing his long axe off to the crew, whirling around so fast it made San's eyes itch.  San clambered into the longboat, sitting as far away from the others as he could in the small boat.  By the dead, he felt sick, and what was worse, he hadn't brought anything to drink.

Skull Dunes part duex
Tyg leads Isileth, San & Sar to join up with Rae, Demigus, Yar & Splinters.  When the skeletons attack Tyg's group, Sar and San split off. Rae, Sar, and Demigus encourage Tyg, Isileth, Sar and San to leave the sand dunes, they know the undead horde pursues only those on the dunes the noise of battle attracts the bony soldiers.  In the climax of the scrap a skeletal juggernaught attacks San and Sar.  Surrounded several times, San burns through most of his spells, coming very close to (un)death.

Tyg and Isileth make it off the dunes, but in aiding their escape Demigus is surrounded and takes a pounding, the now undead Turbo one of the assailants.   When San and Sar finally leave the dunes to reunite the party Demigus and Sar are bloodied and San is lucky to be alive (again) on 1HP.  Having stayed out of the skeletons reach Rae and Yar are unharmed.

Splinters is nowhere to be seen...

After a short rest, the party pushes inland toward the monastery, which they can see is now a smoking ruin, giving the rumours of the pirate raid further credibility.  When a flaming arrow punctures the gloomy morning sky, Isileth spots the archer who fired the alarm, a scarred looking monk.   Having fired off the warning, the monk jumps out from behind a strange finger of rock fleeing to the ruined monastery.

The curious rock turns out to be a colossal monolith of skulls radiating necrotic energy which Demigus recognizes it as a power source.  While Demigus and Rae investigate the monolith Tyg, Yar and Isilteh scour the area finding the tracks of a large canine and massive bovine creatures.

Smoke from the monastery drifts west in the rain, smudging the horizon grey as the party trudge on...

Veilshard Monastery, late morning 11th Kilson 2214

The track from the pillar of skulls runs north for half a mile to a low hill, atop of which stands the burned down ruins of Veilshard monastery.  Morning mist clings stubbornly to the hilltop, mixing with smoke and obscuring the summit.   The track is the only route up the low but steep hillside otherwise covered in hardy dark thorn bushes.

Splinters scouts ahead, finding the path to the top of the hill blocked by a barricade of tree trunks. He disappears into the mist, like smoke, and is swiftly over the obstacle, but sets off a magical alarm and a great bell rings out across the hilltop.  BONG!

On hearing the alarm, Splinters scampers to the cover of trees just as a Minotaur and two ogres charge from the trees toward the barricade, a pair of bad-tempered hell hounds join them from the other side of the hill.  The Minotaur angrily shouts at Yar telling him he's on the wrong side of the barricade.  The party uses the blockade as cover while fighting the monsters who stupidly climb over the obstacle they placed to get at the party, beastmen throw volleys of javelins from the ruins, but few clear the barricade.  The monsters ambush continues to backfire when a hell hound breathes fire on Yar, and it catches the ogres as well and ignites the flasks of katagian fire the monsters hid in the barricade.  BOOM!  The ogres complain that it is not fair then die.  Ambush reversed the party mop the remaining enemy up efficiently, leaving only Eartha the enemy leader alive.  Sar flex's his muscles in a vain attempt to impress the Lomari enchantress but he is upstaged by Demigus and she surrenders to the atlantean.

Eartha
Under the influence of Tyg's zone of truth, Eartha reveals much.  The monastery was destroyed after the infamous Pirate Lord Golden Zatara double-crossed the abbot.  Zatara offered the Abbot a cut from the pirate raids to use the Isle as a base.  Zatara then treacherously back-stabbed the Abbot at a feast celebrating the deal.  Zatara wanted the island as a base and the legendary treasures hidden in the Monastery and he didn't want to share.  However, the pirates could not find the secret entrance to the Chapel, let alone the catacombs.  The skeleton horde was making the pirates pay dearly to hold the beachhead on the dunes, so Zatara decided to cut his losses and withdrew, but not before burning the monastery to the ground.  Eartha, her escort, and the monks hid in the secret Chapel.  With the Abbot dead, Eartha took charge. Eartha is the emissary of Xool (the monks call him the renegade).  Her mission to retrieve relics from the secret catacombs hidden beneath the chapel, known as the Winding Way.  However, the location and means of opening the secret entrance died with the Abbot.  And now, along with the surviving monks, Eartha is marooned.
Hanuman, The Great White Ape
The party enters the hidden Chapel beneath the ruins with Eartha.  Warmed and lit by fire pits and censers, sulfurous yellow smoke fills the chamber.  Mosaics depicting aspects of Nergal decorate the walls and ceiling. Behind the large greenstone altar, the God of Battles presents a white ape with a mighty mace.

The surviving monks crowd around the corpse of the Abbot on the platform.  Tyg, Yar, Splinters, and Demigus consult with the terrified monks (the Ogres had been threatening to eat them) and release the captive 'sailor' T.Bo, who claims to have swum ashore after the pirate attack.  Eartha charms Splinters then tricks Demigus into removing her chains and turning  herself invisible.  Yar examines the Abbots remains taking his holy symbol, an amulet depicting a black lion with a mane of flames with a thick golden chain.  When Yar says utters Nergal's name, the ruby eyes of the amulet glow briefly, and the greenstone altar grinds aside to reveal another secret staircase descending into darkness.

11th Kilson 2214, The Winding Way, Veilshard Monastery

The adventurers emerge from The Winding Way richer but worn out.   Yar caught the mummy rot, Splinters and Isileth almost died.  In the aftermath, San uses the remove curse scroll he found in the Abbots secret chapel, and the monks make a bargain with the party, agreeing to guide the party across the skull dunes if they can hitch a ride to Three Towers.

The journey back to Three Towers seemingly passes without incident.   Upon reaching Three Towers, Aubrek rewards you with one hundred double peacocks each and gives a feast in your honour.  Of the three surviving monks, Daymond leaves for Lomar, Ukko and Vorstag stay at the Temple of the Nine.  In the following weeks, Ukko (with Aubrek's financial and logistical support) returns to Veilshard to begin the restoration of the monastery and discovers Daymond's body.  Aubrek believes the Lomari enchantress Eartha murdered brother Daymond then used sorcery to disguise herself as the unfortunate Lomari and make her escape.  Word of this reaches you of the first day of New Year, as Three Towers gets ready for the wild celebrations that accompany the Festival of Ishtar.
